The first secretary of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, explains wanting to “learn a lesson” from the 2017 presidential election where the Socialist Party had spent more than 15 million euros.

“It’s not the money that makes the result”, said Olivier Faure, first secretary of the Socialist Party, this Thursday on franceinfo, after indicating that the campaign for the presidential election of 2022 of Anne Hidalgo will cost “less” than the campaign of Benoît Hamon in 2017. “We can spend 16 million dollars and make 6%”, he added with reference to the results of the PS candidate in the last presidential election.

According to the National Commission for Campaign Accounts and Political Financing (CNCCFP), Benoît Hamon had spent precisely 15.220 million euros, the second amount behind Emmanuel Macron, the most spending candidate with 16.698 million euros.

The first secretary of the Socialist Party justified himself by wanting “learn a lesson” of this election. “There was even a campaign, much more expensive, which exceeded the authorized limits, that of Bygmalion with the UMP [devenu LR]”, he said, believing that “neither was a winning campaign“.

Olivier Faure rejected the accusation that he would seek to run a “low-cost” 2022 presidential campaign. “There is no plan B” to Anne Hidalgo, he assured. “The evidence is that we are bound not by a political pact but by the fact that we share convictions and that we want to defend them together in this presidential election”, he continued.

Olivier Faure also called “the popular classes, the middle classes and those who today seek a political outlet for their demands” to join Anne Hidalgo’s campaign.
