Saudi Arabia announced, Saturday, October 15, humanitarian aid of 400 million dollars for Ukraine. According to the official SPA news agency, the Crown Prince of this Gulf kingdom, Mohammed bin Salman, spoke on the phone to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. He underlined, during this exchange, “the kingdom’s position to support anything that will contribute to de-escalation, and the kingdom’s willingness to continue mediation efforts”, the agency said.

In September, Ryad had played an unexpected role of mediator, leading to an exchange of prisoners between Moscow and kyiv.

The war in Ukraine, however, has fueled tensions between Saudi Arabia and the United States, with the kingdom refusing to increase oil production as Washington would have liked to alleviate the energy crisis resulting from the conflict.

Riyadh has even come under increasing criticism from the United States following OPEC’s decision, with Saudi Arabia in the first place but also Russia and other allies, to reduce production drastically, which could push energy prices even higher.
