During the Covid-19 pandemic, airlines laid off a number of pilots. They are now looking to hire, but favor seniors over newcomers to the job market.
Queues, and thousands of canceled flights every day. This is the image of summer 2022 in airports. The reason ? A lack of personnel and pilots. There is however no crisis of vocations. In an aviation school, enrollment tripled during the start of the school year. On board an electric plane, the students accumulate flight hours and complete their technique in a simulator. The instructor says he is confident for the future of his students, who can be hired in a few years.
However, these young pilots will only be trained in three years. And it is not necessarily them that the sector needs. During the pandemic, airlines have laid off with a vengeance. Today, they are missing seniors with thousands of flight hours. Newly graduated pilots therefore find it difficult to find work. According to some experts, one in three pilots may never even exercise.
