Mi’kmaq filmmaker Jeff Barnaby, considered a visionary of modern Indigenous cinema, has died at the age of 46 after a year-long battle with cancer.

Raised on the Listuguj reserve in Quebec, Mr. Barnaby has made numerous short films, including The colonynominated for the Prix Jutra (today the Prix Iris), and File under Miscellaneousnominated for the Genie Award.
The Montreal writer-director won acclaim for his feature debut of 2013 Rhymes for ghosts.
He followed up with the 2019 zombie horror movie Quantum Redwhich won the Canadian Screen Awards.
Mr Barnaby is survived by his wife Sarah Del Seronde and son Miles.
