The competitiveness and growth of the European economy is enhanced by companies that file patents. This is revealed by a study conducted in 2017 and 2019 by the European Patent and Intellectual Property Office. The companies concerned are those located in sectors that make extensive use of designs, models, copyrights or geographical indicators in particular.

The industrial companies in question generate 6,400 billion euros of activity, or almost half of the total European GDP – the wealth produced over the year by the European Union. It is also a dynamism in terms of trade, since activities that make heavy use of intellectual and industrial property rights generate more than 75% of trade within Europe itself and 80% of exports, with an increase power of green initiatives and climate technologies.

The sectors that use intellectual protection today employ just over 60 million people in Europe, with direct consequences for subcontractors: 20 million additional jobs were created at this level between 2017 and 2019. As far as France is concerned, French industries that make intensive use of patents represent a quarter – 25.7% precisely – of jobs in France.

It should be noted that France is second, behind Germany, for patent applications relating to what are called “climate change mitigation technologies”, showing that a company which protects its ideas ensures, at the times, its dynamism and that of its ecosystem. This is not only the privilege of large groups: SMEs are also concerned.
