Man arrested for murder of student 22 years ago

Twenty-two years later, a man was finally arrested for the murder of Guylaine Potvin, a 19-year-old Cégep de Jonquière student found dead in her home in April 2000.

Marc-André Grenon, 47, was arrested Wednesday morning by investigators from the Disappearances and Unresolved Cases Division of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) in Granby.

He is to be charged Wednesday afternoon with sexual assault on the young woman and her murder, at the Saguenay courthouse.

He will also be charged with sexual assault and the attempted murder of another student, crimes committed the same year, but this time in Sainte-Foy, a suburb now part of Quebec City.

This young woman, who lived alone, was attacked in her home in July 2000 and left for dead: she survived, however.

He is to be charged with these other crimes at the Quebec City courthouse on Wednesday.

The identification of the suspect and his arrest are the result of the hard work of investigators and new methods of investigation in forensic biology, said the SQ.
