The Ukrainians claim to have recovered 400 km2 in the Kherson region, on the southern front, and liberated 29 localities since October 1. In the East, the soldiers must cross minefields, cross forests and face heavy fire from routed Russians. Report from the Donetsk region.
You have to follow the tanks and their Ukrainian flag to reach the new front line, beyond the town of Lyman (Ukraine). At the edge of the forest, the anti-tank mines, barely cleared, are placed on the sides. Under the trees, we find the old Russian positions: armored vehicles and the lying bodies of soldiers. A half-destroyed bridge leads to the village of Torske (Ukraine), the last one taken over by Ukrainian forces in their counter-offensive in the East.
In the middle of the ruins, soldiers and their drones observe the Russians, who are less than 4 kilometers away with tanks. At the end of the village, it is the street of death: cars marked with the Russian “Z”, and more corpses. You have to drive carefully, because ammunition has still not exploded. In the same street, two old ladies stayed. “We don’t care who comes from. In this village, we have been speaking Russian for a long time. As long as no one hurts us”, says one of them. The two women now know how to identify the detonations.
