In order to limit their waste, supermarkets in Loire-Atlantique use stainless steel trays for their food. Deposited, they are reusable and replace plastic ones.
In La Chapelle-sur-Erdre (Loire-Atlantique), a supermarket offers new trays for meat and fish. In addition to the plastic ones, stainless steel, returnable and reusable trays are also available. Depending on the size, the deposit can amount to two or three euros. This price is not a barrier for consumers: “It’s for the planet, it’s for the future, it’s for the children”says a woman.
After use, the trays are brought back to the supermarket to be cleaned and then reused. This concept was launched by a Nantes start-up which supplies 13 supermarkets with 30,000 stainless steel trays. “It is a material that is durable, suitable for contact with food, which is solid (…) and it is above all a material that we will be able to recycle at the end of its life”, explains Claire Nijdam, co-creator of Berny. In France, around 500 million disposable trays are used in supermarkets.
