mexico | At least 18 people, including the mayor of a municipality, were killed in an armed attack on Wednesday in Totolapan, in the state of Guerrero (south), a judicial source said.
The left-wing mayor of this municipality of approximately 4,300 inhabitants, Conrado Mendoza, is one of the victims of this attack launched in broad daylight in this part of Mexico plagued by numerous violence linked to drug trafficking.
His father, who was himself mayor several years ago, is also among the victims, according to police sources.
Two people were also injured in the attack, prosecutor Sandra Luz Valdovinos told Milenio television without further details.
But according to the Mexican press, it is the work of drug traffickers from the state of Jalisco (west), allied to the powerful cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion.
Some 94 mayors have already been assassinated in Mexico since 2000, according to the organization Etellekt.
Some 340,000 people have died violently since 2006 in Mexico, when the government deployed the military to fight drug cartels.
