the participation rate for breast cancer screening drops in Mayenne

This weekend of October 1 and 2 marks the beginning of Pink October, the month dedicated to the fight and prevention of breast cancer. Before the pink strides in Laval next weekend, a very first pink march is organized in Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne this Sunday at 10 a.m. for a 6.5 km or 4.5 km route from Parc Saint-Fiacre.

The opportunity to collect donations and inform about breast cancer with a prevention village. 52 people from Mayenne died of this disease in 2021 for 236 cancers detected through organized screening. A figure that could really drop with more and earlier screening explains Bernadette Perrot, president of the League against cancer in Mayenne. She was the guest of Experts this Friday on France Bleu Mayenne.

Between the ages of 50 and 74, every two years, women receive an invitation, then a second reminder, then a third reminder. Well despite all that, we only have 51% who participate. In Mayenne, there are 51,700 women who receive these invitations. It’s still quite catastrophic because in ten years, we lost ten participation points.

For Bernadette Perrot, This drop in screening has two explanations: “the politics of the ostrich” and “there was an absolutely stupid controversy where they said mammograms give cancers, which is completely false. So we had a drop in participation throughout Europe and it’s completely stupid because out of 1,000 cancers , there is one caused by the rays and on this one out of 1,000, we include the irradiated women in their adolescence or their beginning of adult life.
