The majority of the media now use or allow the use, with a smirk, of the expression “the word in…”: “the word in i” (“immigration”, The Telejournal of Radio-Canada), “the f-word” (“federalist”, The duty), etc. This is far from trivial, since the original expression, “the n-word”, is heavy with meaning and the debate on freedom of expression and the resulting academic freedom is far from being closed. I perceive a mocking tone in it that I find completely out of place and which contributes to trivializing the original expression. Shouldn’t the serious media keep a little embarrassment while continuing to defend freedom of expression? Let’s use the phrase in context or to address the ensuing debate, but let’s not be ironic about its use or trivialize it.
