(Toronto) The trophy awarded to the Canadian athlete of the year will change its name.

The Lou Marsh Trophy has been awarded annually since 1936 to the nation’s preeminent athlete, male or female, with recipients over the years including Nancy Greene, Wayne Gretzky, Bianca Andreescu and Alphonso Davies.
Decathlete Damian Warner claimed the honor in 2021 after winning gold at the Tokyo Olympics.
The trophy was named in honor of Lou Marsh, a former NHL football player and referee who spent more than 40 years with the Toronto Star’s athletic department in various roles.
Questions have arisen in recent years about whether the honor should be renamed because of the sometimes racist language Marsh used in his writings.
the Toronto Star is accepting public suggestions for a new name for the trophy, and a committee must make a choice before the 2022 award is presented in December.
