The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, called for calm in Guadeloupe, after the violence over the weekend. Against the backdrop of a general strike against vaccination, the health pass, clashes broke out.
At dawn, Monday, November 22, new barricades ignited on the roads of Guadeloupe. The anger is far from overe and in some places no vehicle can pass. To take a patient to the hospital, the firefighters had to walk through the debris. “This is the only solution they will leave us“, explains a firefighter from the city of Sainte-Rose (Guadeloupe). The inhabitants of the surroundings take turns to hold this barricade. They complain about soaring prices : the cost of living would be 12% more expensive than in metropolitan France.
Several houses were set on fire in a popular area of Pointe-à-Pitre. “What did I do and to whom to come and burn my house down?“, testifies, collapsed, one of the victims. “The next few hours worry the police because weapons of war, submachine guns and more than 2,000 ammunition were stolen in Pointe-à-Pitre in the customs offices“, reports Diane Schlienger, journalist at France Télévisions.
