Sports Team | Health Spruce (8/10)

Rock is thriving in Britain, with a cheerful cohort of young bands dusting off their parents’ guitars. With Wolf Alice, Wet Leg and Yard Act, Sports Team leads the charge of this new generation of British musicians who stir the cage, most of the time with a smile on their faces.

Surprise Mercury Prize finalist in 2020 with his debut album Deep Down Happythe Cambridge sextet returns with Gulp!, title referring to the onomatopoeia of the coyote from Road Runner when he finds himself once again suspended in the air before falling to the bottom of a ravine. It reflects a bit of the feeling that the group had when it came time to lay a follow-up to the first album, which had surprised everyone by rising to second place on the charts in the United Kingdom.

As there is no harm in using a winning recipe when it has the advantage of being effective, catchy and original, The Game starts with a bang with a jovial punk energy which is certainly reminiscent of the Hives, an atmosphere found on Kool Aid Where Fingers (Taken Off) – drummer Al Greenwood and bassist Oli Dewdney are having a blast here.

At the microphone, Alex Rice leads the boat with contagious energy, which perfectly serves his often comical, always sarcastic purpose – “living with you is making me sick, I don’t know how your cat takes it…”, wonders he about his partner’s chat on Cool It Kid. Elsewhere, the energy puts itself at the service of frankly well-crafted melodies on R Entertainment, Unstuck and especially The Drop, which promises to be even more irresistible on stage. A North American tour is planned for 2023, let’s hope Quebec will be on the program.
