“The Children of Others”, the triumph of gentleness

With other people’s children, and in a clearly autobiographical register, Rebecca Zlotowski achieves a melody without drama, without conflict between the characters.

And this is the successful bet of this film: telling the story of Rachel, Virginie Efira, 40-year-old teacher, who when she begins a beautiful story with Ali, Roshdy Zem, estranged father of 4-year-old Leila, learns that she may never have children. She is the mother-in-law, that of today in recomposed families, who is looking for a place, on the screen she has the leading role, far from the clichés of the stepmother of Walt Disney.

It is a film of rare intelligence, which recounts, among other things, our time, and Rebecca Zlotowski dares, oh scandal, modesty, gentleness.

Documentary with an unusual form – we only hear David Bowie in the sandstone of the interviews given throughout his 50-year career – Brett Morgen had access to all the personal archives of this extraordinary musician, who was so far ahead of fashion, shaped characters, through the ages.

The David Bowie Foundation gave him this incredible gift, recordings of unpublished concerts, intimate images, but always controlled, up to the staging of the last moments of his life, with the album Blackstar. Brett Morgen inserted graphic images to tie it all together, giving audiences a Bowie experience, while keeping the mystery of the star.
