Two months after the resignation of Mario Draghi, former Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, a member of the far-right party, could find himself at the head of the country. A worrying situation given the lack of love that women politicians have for the European Union.

Two months after the resignation of Mario Draghi, Giorgia Meloni is in pole position to become the Prime Minister of Italy. A unique situation, as Raphaële Schapira tells us in Rome: “There is a symbolic concern. If Meloni’s coalition were to win, it would be the first time that a far-right party found itself at the head of a founding country of the European Union.” A scenario that causes some observers concern, fearing “crises and standoffs with the institutions.”

Another concern raised by Raphaële Schapira, that of Meloni’s supporters, including Silvio Berlusconi and Matteo Salvini, who demanded “apology or resignation” by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Union Commission, after discussing possible sanctions “if the next government were to undermine fundamental democratic principles in Europe.”
