Tiger mosquitoes were present in large numbers during the summer of 2022. In the metropolis of Lyon, several mayors are asking the Ministry of Health for help. Report in Mions, a town invaded by mosquitoes.
The mayor (LR) of Mions (Rhône), Claude Cohen, has declared war on mosquitoes. To protect its 15,000 residents from swarms of biting insects, the town hall financed the installation of 24 mosquito traps. “It emits a sense of smell, like a man. There is a device that attracts mosquitoes, and sucks them in“, he explains. The device is effective up to 100 meters, so it would take a lot more to be quiet in this small residential town, with gardens and terraces.
The town hall also participated in the purchase of 600 traps for family use. For some, that’s still not enough. “We couldn’t go on the terrace this summer because we were invaded by mosquitoes”, explains a resident. Same scenario in a retirement home equipped with mosquito traps and a small park. “Residents stay in their homes more, or come to collective spaces but avoid going outside”, explains Mahée Rolland, manager of the retirement home. Like other elected officials in the sector, Claude Cohen sent a letter to the Minister of Health.
