On her phone, Veronika often chats with the many refugees from Lorraine. They are more than 600 gathered together on a conversation of an online messaging application. Like them, this Ukrainian architect, who has lived in Nancy for several years, is reassured of the turn of the war. “This is very good news that we have been waiting for impatiently. We only had bad news with the cities falling one after the other“, she confides.
The war still on
At the start of the war, Veronika saw her mother and her childhood best friend join her in Nancy, as the 1,500 refugees currently established in Meurthe-et-Moselle. “We continue to be afraid because I see that their morale remains low“, she explains remaining lucid on the fact that the war is still in progress.
But she still hopes for a happy ending to this conflict. “Life will win, that’s for sure“, she smiles. And to win, she can count on the positive signals sent by her mother. “She is trying to learn French to work. And seeing the counter-offensive, she explained to me that she wanted to go quickly because there is a chance that she would come back sooner than expected.“Even if, like many refugees, his stay in France was to last at least 1 year.
