Emmanuel Macron wants to move forward on the end-of-life issue. A citizens’ convention on the subject will be launched in October, learned the political service of France Télévisions from the entourage of the President of the Republic. The Head of State will specify on Tuesday the contours of this citizens’ convention, which is to last six months, in order to come up with a new law by the end of 2023.

Adopted in 2016, after a first version in 2005, it prohibits euthanasia and assisted suicide, but allows “deep and continuous sedation until death” for terminally ill patients in very great suffering, whose vital prognosis is engaged “short term”.
