Quebec must have a public register of sex offenders, according to Conservative leader Éric Duhaime, who criticizes the Legault government for not having respected the commitment it made in this regard in 2018.
In a press briefing Monday morning before the National Assembly, the leader of the Conservative Party of Quebec (PCQ) pledged to create such a register if his party comes to power on October 3.
Mr. Duhaime recalled, sound clips in support, that during the 2018 election campaign, the one who would become Premier of Quebec, François Legault, and the one who would become Minister of Public Security, Geneviève Guilbault, had both committed to creating a public registry of sex offenders during a first term, which was not done.
He was surrounded by the lawyer and former Minister of Justice, Marc Bellemare, and Sophie Dupont, a citizen who has been actively campaigning since 2004 for the Government of Quebec to move forward in this file. Ms. Dupont has created a Facebook page aimed at identifying those convicted of sexual offenses, in order to prevent them from committing other crimes against children.
Mr. Bellemare, a former Liberal minister in the Charest government, said that his presence alongside Mr. Duhaime did not signify support for the Conservative Party, but for the cause he defends.
Such a registry already exists at the federal level, but only law enforcement agencies have access to it.
