September, the month of the Pike?

Bruno Garcia of the Charente-Maritime fishing federation answers questions from listeners of France Bleu la Rochelle, today Jean-Michel de Saintes would like to know if September is a good month for pike fishing.

Bruno Garcia : September is the month of all Jean-Michel peaches and pike there are on a majority of the rivers of Charente-Maritime with the exception of the marsh canals where the water lacks clarity and where the pike has difficulty feeding since it cannot see its prey.

So a news fish in September?

And big pike in September! Our small waterways respond very quickly to changes in weather, to the cooler nights currently and therefore to changes in temperature. As everyone knows, this temperature is the main factor in triggering fish activity.

If I understand correctly, this month that is beginning can allow all anglers to catch a nice pike.

We know thanks to the inventories that have been made that there are big pike, but the difficulty is that there are fewer of them than the little ones. The density of large fish is always lower than small ones.

It couldn’t be more logical.

Yes indeed whatever the species. The age pyramid is always more or less the same, at the bottom thousands or even hundreds of thousands of juveniles and at the top of this same pyramid, for pike for example, a few individuals reaching 1 m and sometimes a little more. This size will be reached by the strongest and smartest.

Surely some rivers are more favorable than others

Of course you will have to be in the right place at the right time and the right time to respond to JM is September.

We would like names even if we know the good fishing spots are like the good mushroom spots

The Charente river, the Seugne, the Sèvre Niortaise, the Dronne, the Marans-La Rochelle canal, these are some of the rivers which, I am sure, are home to large pike.

One technique more than another?

For my part, I have two preferences which both correspond to itinerant fishing: the lure and the handled dead fish. These two techniques allow you to cover a lot more ground. To go in front of the fish rather than waiting for it to come to you. And finally do not hesitate to use lures of 15 to 20 cm, you will necessarily have fewer bites but you will flush out a trophy fish more easily.

Some information ?

Already maintenance work on the Charras canal which will begin tomorrow and which will last until the end of October. Pruning of hedges, maintenance and securing of trees, end-of-season shredding. It goes without saying that there are safety instructions intended to protect canal users. I remind you that it is imperative to respect them.

And next Saturday, September 17 again on the Charente-Seudre canal in Marennes and still organized by the Marennes fishing association, a feeder fishing competition in pairs. I can safely say that there will be spectacular results with large quantities of fish caught.
