After years of growth, sales of organic products are falling in specialty stores. The consequences are direct for market gardeners, who favor direct sales to maintain their margins. Report in Saône-et-Loire.
Camille, who has her habits in a specialized store in Mâcon (Saône-et-Loire), favors organic and local food. However, it remains vigilant with regard to expenditure. In recent months, consumers have reduced their purchases of organic products. Signs and supermarkets are the most affected: between -2 and -10% in 2021, after a decade of increase. “Our whole system was mobilized to meet this sharply increasing demand. We were on a +15% consumption train before the Covid, and here we are rather on -15%”comments Carole Fouque, manager of the Biocoop store.
For their part, organic producers are also struggling. The sales of Pierre Pernot, organic farmer and market gardener La Bad Graine, have fallen by 30% since the end of 2021. For lack of a sufficient purchase price, he therefore no longer works with specialized brands. Guillaume Morel, organic market gardener at the Jardins du Vernay, set up shop at the start of the year. Many customers are already there: in a few months, he already feeds a hundred families.
