Twice Therese Mastroiacovo | The duty

His performative and conceptual drawings will be featured in two exhibitions this fall.

Unfortunately, we had seen less of his work in Montreal in recent years. Her last solo exhibition dates back to 2013 at the Clark Center… Therese Mastroiacovo had certainly participated in collective exhibitions, here and there in the metropolis, such as this presentation on drawing at the Molinari Foundation in 2017. It must be said that in the meantime, she had a two-year creation residency at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin and exhibitions in Germany, Portugal and even Australia! Here she is finally back here, where she will participate in two exhibitions this fall.

In the first, which has just begun, Mastroiacovo will show how his research on the series Art Now (2005 to present) has evolved in recent years. Remember that this work is a work of performative drawings, process drawings, made in pencil from books and catalogs all bearing, regardless of their recent or very old date of publication, the word ” now on their cover. She redrew slowly, in a very different temporal relationship to that evoked by the nwow, titles and highlights of the front pages of these books. The very duration of the project, since 2005, contradicts the relevance of this idea of an art of the now and even of this concept of a contemporary art.

The exhibition is called Rethink and assume. Trajectory of an exhibition, and it’s on view at Concordia University’s Leonard and Bina Ellen Center through October 29. Mastroiacovo will be paired there with the artist Sarah Greig who, like her, teaches drawing and works on an artistic documentation of a creative process.

Curated by Michèle Thériault, this presentation will be accompanied by the launch of the book Unfinished After.

In the second exhibition, this theme of research and documentation will also be in the spotlight. The visitor will see there what could be called the backstage of art, its creative process. A publication will allow Mastroiacovo to offer a white notebook that can be detached. The buyer can use this notebook in which he will find an original drawing by the artist, made on transparent paper using letraset. An invitation to creation or reflection? In the gallery, Mastroiacovo will exhibit his private collection [Private Collection]works showing the traces she made while creating her drawings, by pressing with a pencil on these old and fragile letrasets, sometimes crossing them on a sheet placed below…

Her art will be exhibited alongside that of Stephanie Comilang, kg Guttman and Catherine Lescarbeau. At the Dazibao center until November 5. An exhibition presented by France Choinière.
