Who says back to school says (often) purchase of equipment and new outfits. The column “1 planet, solutions”, produced by NOWU in partnership with France Info, offers an economic and ecological solution: not to buy new clothes during the whole month of September.
The Oxfam organization launched its “Second Hand September” challenge in 2018, which has been coming back every year. The principle is simple: throughout the month of September, if you need new clothes, try to turn to second-hand clothes instead.
Why buy used? Because choosing a garment that is not new avoids the environmental impact linked to its production. The fashion industry today emits between 2% and 10% of CO2 emissions. It also consumes a lot of water: making just 1 T-shirt requires the water equivalent of 70 showers.

Giving a second life to a garment that has already been worn also avoids generating additional waste. As a reminder, the equivalent of a garbage truck of fabric is burned or buried every second in the world!
In 2021, more than one in three French people bought second-hand according to a study by the Institut Français de la Mode. To do like them and if you want to take up the challenge of Second Hand September, you can turn to thrift stores, sites specializing in the resale of clothing online (such as Vinted, Videdressing, or Depop), or simply ask around you to your loved ones if they have clothes they no longer wear and would be willing to donate.
