In the south of Ukraine, despite the fighting which continues to rage, the harvest takes place in the region of Kherson. But the vineyards were strongly affected by the Russian bombardments.
Six months ago, Russian tanks entered Kherson, a Ukrainian city of 300,000 inhabitants. Since the beginning of the summer, in this southern region, the Ukrainian army has been leading a counter-offensive, and the fighting is raging. But near the front line, in a vineyard, everything seems calm. This 10-hectare estate belongs to Pavlo Magalias, a former weightlifter converted into wine. A few hundred meters away, on the other side of the bank, Russians and Ukrainians clash.
“The first thing that comes to mind is hatred towards Russians. I want to smash them to pieces. Before, everyone was at home. We worked well here. So why did they come? What do they want from us?“, asks the owner of the vineyard. The same questions torment the wine workers. Despite the imminent war, they continue to work. Harvest time has arrived and the grapes are ripe. “On hears from here that they bombard. It makes noise, but we have no choice, what else can we do? We have to live well, so we have to work“, summarizes Zynayida Bosa, one of the workers.
