With the sharp rise in the cost of energy, some ski resorts are worried about the opening of the ski lifts. Professionals are worried about a possible drop in attendance at the stations.
What if the ski lifts were shut down this winter? A third of ski resorts are currently renewing their energy contract. Faced with soaring prices, some resorts do not even know if they will be able to open for the coming season. “We paid 50 euros per megawatt, there the discussions, we are at 800 euros per megawattsays Guillaume Ruel, president of the Villard-de-Lans ski lift company (Isère). With the price increases, the bill would amount to 2.5 million euros, we would be unable to honor our bill.
In France, 120,000 jobs depend on the winter sports industry. Stationary ski lifts worry other professionals in the Isère resort. “If there is no skiing, I am not sure that tourists come to us, worries Frederic Arnaud, owner of a sports shop. That’s where the danger is.” Jobs are also directly at risk, “this would be reflected in the number of employeeswarns Matthias Molina, restaurateur. Less overtime and hiring that wouldn’t happen at all.” Other stations are already thinking of adapting to the situation.
