Five years compared to two currently. The European Union would like to extend the life of smartphones. To this end, it wishes to put in place several directives which could come into force as early as 2024.
Europe wants mobile phones to be greener. For this, Brussels would like them to last longer by forcing manufacturers to abandon planned obsolescence. “We change telephones on average every two years, in the future Brussels would like it to be every five years. This would save tons of metals, plastics”explains journalist François Beaudonnet on set.
If all phones lasted five years, that would be equivalent to taking 5 million cars off the road. This is why the European Union (EU) “wishes that phone batteries would be more resistant by promoting repair rather than buying a new one”, adds the journalist. The EU would also like each smartphone to be sold with a label, an ecological efficiency label, where the consumer would find the estimated lifespan of the device but also its resistance to falls. All of this could come into force as early as 2024.
