In Germany, electricity producers will finally be heavily taxed. The government is counting on this windfall of tens of billions to finance a new household aid plan. This is the famous tax on the superprofits of companies that enrich themselves thanks to the increase in the price of electricity. Will France follow suit?
Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz seem to agree to put energy people to work via a European rule. In their sights are companies that are taking advantage of the crisis, such as those that sell their electricity at a high price. They are the ones who produce from coal, wind turbines or nuclear energy, that is to say energies that do not cost more than before. France and Germany would like to use them to help Member States finance their measures against inflation.
But convincing the 27 member states could take time. The German Chancellor is already warning that if Europe does not intervene, Germany will use itself directly in the profits of its companies. “If there are windfall profits, that means there are many, many, many billions that we can give back to our citizens. That’s the idea”said Olaf Scholz, German Chancellor.
