Cases of violence against women must be judged “specifically”, advocates in the Journal du Dimanche Isabelle Rome, Minister Delegate for Gender Equality, two days after the announcement by the Prime Minister of the creation of a parliamentary mission responsible for making proposals for improve the legal treatment of domestic violence.

“Slapping your wife has nothing to do with stealing a cell phone from a store. You have to question this act and give her an immediate response”declares Isabelle Rome, who believes that“We must also question the violence of the perpetrators and provide specific support to the victims”. Minister Delegate to Elisabeth Borne for Gender Equality, she specifies that the parliamentary mission will be composed “of different groups” and that they will formulate recommendations “within six months”.

Although she explains that she does not “does not want to anticipate the conclusions of the mission”, on the subject of the creation, or not, of a category of magistrates, Isabelle Rome explains that it could be possible to draw inspiration “models like Spain or Quebec”. In these two countries, specialized courts deal with gender-based violence. Since 2004, after the passing of a dedicated law, Spain has seen a significant drop in the figures linked to domestic violence.

The Minister Delegate for Gender Equality also wants new measures on the protection of children facing violence. “We have to put an end to this old pattern according to which an abusive spouse can be a good father”says Isabelle Rome, who wishes “draw the consequences in terms of the exercise of parental authority, visiting rights and accommodation”.
