A cetacean “with a length of 15/20 meters” was found on the island of Sein, off Finistère on Friday September 2, AFP learned from the maritime prefecture of the Atlantic.
Around 2:30 p.m., the Regional Operational Center for Surveillance and Rescue (CROSS) Corsen “was informed by an individual of the presence of a cetacean of 15/20 meters stranded” in the south of the island of Sein, the maritime prefecture told AFP.
Firefighters rushed to the scene. The Pelagis observatory as well as the Departmental Directorate of Territories and the Sea (DDTM) have been informed. “The reasons for this stranding are at this stage unknown”said the prefecture on Twitter, with a photo of the stranded cetacean.

Strandings of cetaceans of this size are relatively rare on the French coasts. In November 2021, a fin whale of 19 meters and about fifteen tons was stranded in the port of Calais after being injured.
