François Bayrou is one of Emmanuel Macron’s most loyal supporters, and there is a certain logic in appointing the one who is already High Commissioner for Planning: in this capacity, François Bayrou has been working on the situation in the country for two years already. , its strengths and weaknesses. Above all, the reports of the High Commission draw up medium and long-term perspectives, a whole range of forward-looking work to shed light on the action of the public authorities with regard to demographic, economic, social and environmental issues. It is therefore coherent to entrust François Bayrou with the coordination of another body, this CNR, which is also turned towards the future.
But if Emmanuel Macron chose François Bayrou, it is also because he did not have many other choices. We are not rushing to the gate to join this National Council for Refoundation. The unions and associations requested should be there, but on the political side, on the other hand, it is bleak plain… The four left-wing parties of the Nupes, the Insoumis and their socialist, communist and Green allies, are boycotting. The Republicans will not be there either, nor will the National Rally. The President of the Senate, Gérard Larcher also practices the policy of the empty chair. And even a support from Emmanuel Macron, former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, decided to be represented there by an elected member of his Horizons movement.
Firstly because the executive does not have an absolute majority, François Bayrou and his troops are therefore more essential than ever. The centrist leader has also been pleading for many years for dialogue and the search for compromise across partisan divisions.
Finally, until now, macronism was first of all an optimism which did not fit well with the often gloomy oracles of the head of the Modem. And now the Head of State has just decreed “the end of abundance and carelessness”. He thus validates the prophecies of François Bayrou who sees coming for France “the most serious crisis since the war.” Enough to create a great atmosphere during the meetings of the National Council for Refoundation!
