He distinguished himself during the playoffs against the Calgary Flames, in particular, by stopping 64 shots during a loss in the seventh game. That overtime loss to the Flames in the first round of the playoffs concluded a season in which Oettinger established himself as the team’s starting goaltender.

Despite starting last season in the American Hockey League when several veteran goaltenders were also on the Stars roster, Oettinger went 30-15-1 in the regular season.

The 64 saves made by the 23-year-old goalkeeper in the final showdown against the Flames were part of the 272 saves he made over the seven games.

“Jake’s performances last season spoke for themselves,” Stars general manager Jim Nill said. “He has exceptional physical skills and an excellent presence in front of the net.

“He also shows phenomenal mental toughness when faced with a lot of pressure. Jake’s composure and character off the ice made him a leader in our locker room. He has shown he has the skills, work ethic and composure to excel at the NHL level. »

Jason Robertson, the fourth player in Stars history to achieve a 40-goal season, is now the team’s only restricted fall player.

Oettinger, who is six-foot-five, placed 10e ranked in the NHL last season with a 2.53 goals-against average and .914 save percentage. He set a team record for the fewest number of games needed to reach his 25e win in one season, making it to his 40e appearance.

26e an overall pick in the 2017 draft, Oettinger made his NHL debut during the 2020 playoffs.

Oettinger, who had 29 games as a rookie in 2020-21, started the season with the Texas Stars in the AHL.

He did, however, take advantage of the opportunity that came his way after injuries to Khudobin (hip) and Braden Holtby (lower body). Veteran goaltender Ben Bishop had to end his career due to a degenerative knee problem.
