Who says back to school says return of the canteen for millions of children in France. The possible price increase is a real question everywhere in the four corners of France. Journalist Franck Besnier was live from a dining room in Cagny, Calvados, in 12/13.

The return from school is that of schoolbags, lessons, but it is also that of recreation and the canteen. In Cagny (Calvados), Franck Besnier kept company with schoolchildren who were making their comeback in this canteen. “On the menu for this first meal of the year: beetroot, ravioli and apple sauce. 144 children are registered for this meal. There is a lot of noise with the joy of meeting after a morning of class and two months of vacation, but also, we saw some tears in the toddlers who returned to school this morning”explains the journalist.

The question of the price and accessibility of these canteens raises questions with the inflation that the country is experiencing. “We are at 3.71 euros per meal and per child, that has not increased for two years. It is a will of the municipality”, emphasizes Franck Besnier. No increase when new costs should be incurred quickly. “Cagny is a town of 2,000 inhabitants of the Caen conurbation which has doubled its population in ten years and we are a little cramped in this canteen. Work is planned and should start next month”concludes the journalist.
