an exceptional year for Guérande salt

The sun has been shining continuously on the Guérande salt marshes for three months. From May to mid-August, there was hardly any rain, so the year promises to be ideal for salt production. “A satisfactory year for a salt worker is a year of drought with a lot of sun, a lot of wind which evaporates the water and low or non-existent rainfall that we have experienced this year”explains Laurent Boulo, Guerande (Loire Atlantique). He harvested 230 tonnes, three times than a normal average year.

With the prolonged drought, the salt becomes denser, heavier so the work is more tiring, under strong heat. Enzo Marin has just started working as a salt worker. His main problem was with the staff. He had to organize the work of seasonal workers all summer. Thanks to the 2022 vintage, it can settle in serenely.
