In the shoes of the info of Valérie Masson-Delmotte, the new “coach” of the government on climate issues

My name is Valérie Masson-Delmotte, I am a climatologist. And if everyone wants to invite me on the sets and on the radio, it’s because it’s me who will be in front of the ministers to “raise awareness” of global warming. I was notified last week while on vacation. Back on the wheel hats to prepare for this express 30-minute training. It’s a little and a lot at the same time. We’ll have to be synthetic…

In fact, I’m used to speaking in front of politicians. In the spring, it was I who presented the IPCC report to Emmanuel Macron with ten other experts. And, of course, I always prepare with the other scientists. And I rely on our knowledge: the climate that is getting out of control, and the consequences that we are seeing today, with extreme heat, water shortages, shocks and loss of agricultural yield… But beyond from all this knowledge, I will also make recommendations while remaining of course in my place as a scientist.

First, scaling up on climate adaptation. In concrete terms, this means putting in the necessary resources and no longer managing crisis after crisis. Change of scale also on the training of political leaders: that climate issues are at the heart of teaching at ENA at Sciences Po, so that the State is exemplary and, at all levels, we show the example to act, whether on insulation or on modes of travel, that there is consistency between the effort required of everyone and practices at the highest level.

In any case, tell them that symbolic choices are important. But what I would like above all is to touch the ministers, not only as a minister, but also the people. So that each of them appropriates these issues personally, deeply. So that each time they have a decision to make, they ask themselves the right question: will this decision reduce our greenhouse gases? Will it go fast enough? Will it protect nature? Will it allow us to reduce our demand for energy, land, water? Will it allow us to be more resilient?

So, yes, you see, it’s an important day for me because I hope to inspire action. And because I can’t plant myself…
