After a scorching summer, the drought and the fires that destroyed hundreds of thousands of hectares throughout Europe had a strong impact on the minds of the French. According to an exclusive Odoxa poll for France Bleu published on Monday, 86% of French people say they are worried about France. They are 71% to fear being personally affected by a climatic event.

The proportion of worried people decreases with advancing age. Thus, 81% of 18-24 year olds questioned in this survey say they fear being personally affected, compared to 62% of those over 65 years old. Managers are also more worried (79%) than workers (61%).

The Odoxa Institute estimates that 87% of French people think that global warming is already having its effects. They are also 30% to think “it is already too late” to act, up 7 points compared to 2019. 77% of those questioned feel that the climatic disturbances observed this summer can become regular.

Despite this shared anxiety, 6 out of 10 French people still consider that the measures envisaged by the government to protect the environment can be effective, such as the increase in taxes on private jet journeys (62%), the creation of 3 000 green gendarmes (61%) and even the implementation of a “sobriety plan” for the French to reduce their energy consumption (59%).

58% of respondents believe that the French “still have a lot of effort to make” and that “we must radically review our lifestyles and consumption patterns.” This survey was conducted on the internet on August 24 and 25 with a sample of 1,005 people representative of the French population aged 18 and over. The margin of error is 2.5 points.
