The cry from the heart launched in a TVA Nouvelles report by a single mother of a disabled child moved all of Quebec and sparked a vast solidarity campaign.
On August 18, Christiane St-Georges told TVA Nouvelles that her son Louis-David’s elevator had not been working for four months and that she had just received a threat of appeal for payment for the machine.
Since Ms. St-Georges could not find an electrician to carry out a permanent installation, the grant to which the lady was entitled was delayed.
Two hours after the broadcast of the report, the elevator, whose battery was defective, was replaced by Dominic Bélisle. An electrician from the FFF company also did the permanent work for him free of charge.
“I had about 1200 requests from electricians who wrote to me that they would come and do it for free, so a big wave of love from all electricians. I think that all the electricians in Quebec have mobilized, ”said Louis-David’s mother.
She also received hundreds of messages and offers of all kinds. For example, the company Clôtures Frontenac wrote him a check for $1,500 for the return to school of his four children.
“Monsieur told me that he saluted my courage, to have four children and to work full time at the same time”, she testified.
She managed to shake off the bureaucracy, which was her goal: the elevator will be fully subsidized and the SHQ will review its way of doing things. She even invited Christiane St-Georges to a round table.
“I’ve even had testimonials from moms that they’ve been waiting for months and months after the grants,” she added.
