Emmanuel Macron and Abdelmadjid Tebboune signed an agreement to renew their partnership on Saturday August 27. The Algerian president hailed “a very successful visit”.
Saturday August 27 in Algiers (Algeria), Emmanuel Macron signed what should mark the beginning of a new relationship between France and Algeria. After long hours of discussions with his Algerian counterpart Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the two presidents agreed to renew their partnership and put an end to several months of diplomatic tensions between Paris and Algiers. “It was a very successful visit which put a lot of things in their place and which allowed a rapprochement which would not have been possible if it were not for the very personality of President Macron”says Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The two countries have decided to work hand in hand to study the history of colonization and the war in Algeria. Emmanuel Macron announced that historians will be commissioned, “but above all [l’objectif est d’]together, to open, to restore the archives, to treat, and it is mentioned in the declaration, all the sensitive subjects on both sides”. During these three days of visit to Algeria, the French president increased his trips to solemn places while maintaining other more relaxed visits such as to a record store in Oran, before treating himself to an unexpected walkabout, and some little heckled. The negotiations also focused on better cooperation on visas and deportations to the border, but also the development of partnerships in the field of energy, education or culture.
