Saturday August 27, the nuclear power plant of Zaporizhia, Ukraine, is still on high alert as it was revealed that there are vaporizations of radioactive substances. Maryse Burgot takes stock of the situation.
The central of Zaporizhia (Ukraine) is under close surveillance. Russian troops occupy the site. However, vaporizations of radioactive substances would come off the plant. “It is impossible to verify anything on the ground since we do not have access to this nuclear power plant”, reveals Maryse Burgot. Although the French Institute for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety argues that there are currently no dangers, the opinion of the Ukrainian authorities is different.
“The Ukrainians indeed evoke this evening a risk of spraying of radioactive material after a bombardment by the Russians. So it is false say the Russians. They explain that it is rather the Ukrainians who would have sent 17 shells on this nuclear power plant”reports Maryse Burgot. The responsibility is therefore rejected from one camp to the other. Experts should however go to the plant in order to precisely assess the situation on site.
