“At one point, there were no math lessons at all. I felt like a prostitute, as if I was doing her favors in exchange for exam answers, ”recalls the victim of Dominic Morvan, whose identity is protected by a publication ban.

The former teacher at Magdeleine high school, on the South Shore of Montreal, was sentenced in October 2021 to 12 months incarceration in the community for having sexually exploited a minor.

In the early 2000s, Morvan, who was 26, was his guardian. However, over the course of the meetings, which took place at the home of the 17-year-old student, the time devoted to mathematics became increasingly rare, she tells the Log.

“I felt disgusting, like I had been used. That’s what struck me the most. Even today, I think about it and it turns my stomach upside down, ”says the one who is now in her mid-thirties.

The survivor believes that at 17 she was a perfect victim.

“I had a guardian, because my parents were too busy with work. He had my trust and that of my parents. I didn’t have many friends, no one to confide in and I was in love with him. He knew it. »

hard to trust

It was always difficult for her to trust men after these events, because she believed that they were interested in her “just to use me”.

Despite the psychological scars she has had since her teenage years, it took her years to realize that she had been exploited.

“I believed for a long time that I had some responsibility, that it was my fault if it had happened, because I had seduced him. But he was the adult in the room, ”she says indignantly.

Then she became an English teacher herself at a private college, where she realized it was all too easy to gain a student’s trust when wearing the teacher’s hat.

Unable to become a teacher

“After a lesson, a young person confided in her desire to change sex. She had never told anyone. That very evening, I realized everything… the power I had over life [de ces élèves] “, she explains.

Disgusted, she gave up her teaching career without finishing the school year, because it brought back too many memories.

A few months later, she denounced her attacker after having seen by chance a call on social networks from a police force which was looking for potential victims of Morvan. His complaint is the only one that ultimately made it to court.

“It was a process that made me feel good. All the bad feelings I had in me, I had the right to feel them, ”she drops.
