Hundreds of bronze plaques have reportedly been stolen from cemeteries across southern Alberta to supposedly be resold as the price of the metal rises.
Calgary police said they are investigating the theft of about 300 bronze plaques from a cemetery in the northwest of the city.
An unknown number of bronze flower vases were also stolen from the cemetery, the Calgary Herald reported on Friday.
Family members visiting the location were the first to alert staff, who subsequently contacted Calgary police.
Police believe the plates were stolen to be sold as scrap, with the price of the metal rising. There have reportedly been several incidents of bronze plaques being stolen from monuments in southern Alberta in recent months.
“The theft of these plates will undoubtedly leave citizens disappointed and upset,” said Staff Sergeant Colin Chisholm. We are asking anyone with information on the location of the plaques or information on who was responsible for the thefts to come forward.”
