How to plan a short jaunt to the United States with the reopening of the land border?

This text is part of the special Plaisirs booklet

Since November 8, the United States has reopened its land border to non-essential travel by doubly vaccinated Canadians. After a collective sigh, we are entitled to wonder if “normal” tourism is really back. Is it still too complicated to plan a short trip to our neighbors? A brief overview of the various measures to be taken, with some suggestions of cities that we can not wait to find.

Vaccination requirements at the border

This border easing only concerns Canadians who have been doubly vaccinated and who have received vaccines recognized by the World Health Organization (those of Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca in Canada). Canada has also lifted its advisory advising Canadians against non-essential travel outside the country, which had been in effect since the start of the pandemic.

It was also confirmed that the four million Canadians who received a mixture of vaccines will be allowed to cross the border. U.S. authorities do not require a negative COVID-19 test to enter the United States, except for arrivals by air. Currently, Canada still requests a negative PCR test performed less than 72 hours before return home time, but this latest barrier is expected to drop by the end of November for stays abroad not exceeding 72 hours. time.

In the meantime, any Canadian who wishes to travel to the United States will therefore have to undergo a screening test there, even if they plan to stay there only on weekends. Since the cost of this test can reach over $ 200 per person, it is worth thinking about, especially when it comes to a family trip.

Note that, for very short stays, the screening test should be able to be done in Canada before you leave for the United States. But it is important to monitor government decisions, as they are subject to change, and to learn about the measures in force, which vary from one American city to another.

The cities we can’t wait to find

When it comes to planning short trips to the United States, the New England area is usually considered first. With its six states – Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island and Connecticut – it is historically and culturally rich, in addition to offering magnificent encounters with nature. Hikers will be able to confirm it to you!

Burlington, Vermont

On the shores of Lake Champlain, about a two-hour drive from Montreal, Burlington is Vermont’s largest city. Green and charming city, it invites you to stroll with its pedestrian arteries, such as Church Street, located in the heart of the small municipality and giving access to many restaurants, shops and historic buildings. We also go to Burlington for its beer route, with institutions like Foam Brewers. If you have time, don’t hesitate to make a detour to the Farmer’s Market, which takes place every Saturday in an old train station until mid-December. The food is extremely good too, whether it’s for a retro lunch at Henry’s Diner, an establishment open since 1925, or to taste the famous pizzas at the American Flatbread.

New Hampshire

For lovers of the great outdoors, New Hampshire may be the perfect destination, especially for its many mountains and hundreds of lakes, including the famous Winnipesaukee which crisscrosses the edges of charming small towns. For hiking, we turn more particularly to the White Mountains, whose trails extend over 260 kilometers. The region is also home to 48 peaks exceeding 4,000 feet in elevation, including the famous Mount Washington, the highest point in the northeastern United States. In addition to the popularity of outdoor activities, the coastal town of Portsmouth is inviting with its many restaurants and bars.

Boston, Massachusetts

Massachusetts has a high vaccination rate and measures such as wearing a mask are still in effect. Especially in public transport, in shops and in restaurants. The historic gems will be to be discovered thanks to the Freedom Trail circuit, which offers a foray into the emblematic districts of the city, including Beacon Hill, a must-see. To continue the walk, Copley Square, often bustling with markets or festivals, is a very good option. In the perfect maritime city, Boston offers seafood that is very popular. So why not take the opportunity to indulge yourself at Union Oyster House or Barking Crab?
