Ukraine, Wednesday August 24, Independence Day, was under high tension. The fears of the authorities have been confirmed: a strike left at least 22 dead in the east of the country. Maryse Burgot, special correspondent in Kharkiv, gives an update on the latest information.
This is exactly the scenario feared by the Ukrainian authorities, Wednesday August 24, in the middle of Independence Day. A missile fell near a railway station in the small town of Chaplyne (Ukraine), in the east of the country, on Wednesday evening. “It was Ukrainian President Zelensky himself who announced it, during a videoconference with the UN Security Council”, explains Maryse Burgot, special correspondent in Kharkiv (Ukraine). The president announced that the strike left 15 dead, but in the evening the toll rose to at least 22 dead.
“The first images show a completely gutted train. It is a drama that occurs on this very symbolic day. It has been six months to the day that the invasion of Ukraine began. This drama also recalls that of the war in Kramatorsk (Ukraine), last April. A Russian missile fell on a crowd, while hundreds of people tried to flee the region”explains the journalist.
