Many Quebec artists are beginning to turn their backs on the French language in hopes of breaking into the English-speaking market, notes Mouffe. And the famous lyricist and director does not hide it: this observation is “very worrying”.
“I understand the attraction of wanting to break into the English-speaking market, which is much larger. But if we fought for so long to preserve our French language, we must not stop today, ”she says firmly.
“We have a great language. Words are our best friends and we must learn to use them to convey emotions and sensations to the public. We can enjoy in French, you know,” continues Mouffe in a laughing tone.
The fight of a lifetime
It is well known that Claudine Monfette – alias Mouffe – has made the defense of the French language her hobbyhorse throughout her career. And she continues to do so today with a very first prize bearing her name, soon to be awarded by Théâtre Outremont.
Beginning next month, the institution will welcome applications from singer-songwriters wishing to promote our language through their writing. Because Mouffe herself imposed an important condition: the candidates must “have the audacity and the courage to sing” in French.
The reward at stake? A $10,000 scholarship and mentorship in staging, production and show distribution. All of this will culminate in a concert given at Théâtre Outremont next spring, staged with the help and advice of Mouffe herself.
“I had the chance to work with the greatest. I’m getting older and I know I can’t go and take it all with me, rudely, whether it’s heaven or hell. I must pass it on to those who come after me. And that’s what I try to do,” she explains.
Always active
At 77, the one who has written dozens of hit songs admits never having put down her pen. She doesn’t intend to either. But don’t expect to hear his lyrics sung anytime soon; Mouffe now does it for his “own pleasure”.
“No one asks me for a song anymore. That’s old age; we are left behind, ”she drops.
Some might be bitter in the face of such a situation. But not Mouffe.
“Obviously, I would be flattered if someone wanted to sing my lyrics. But I’m happy with what I have. I make my happiness myself, ”she confides, serenely.
The launch of the call for applications will take place on September 13th. The winner of the first Mouffe prize will be announced in January 2023.
