In Germany, a country extremely dependent on Russian gas, we continue to seek new sources of energy supply. After the announcement two months ago of an increased use of coal, the Minister of Economy, the Green Robert Habeck, unveiled a new package of measures on Wednesday August 24, in order to increase the pace on the side of the economies of energy. Thus, it will be better to avoid long waits in the corridors of public administrations next winter. The heating will be turned off from September 1, and limited to 19°C in the offices. In the toilets, the hot water will be cut off, and the private sector is strongly urged to follow the example of the federal administrations. Hospitals and social institutions are exempt from the measures.
Other measures will this time target the waste of electricity, as Robert Habeck explains: “We have adopted measures that go without saying, for example that the doors of heated rooms must not be left open in winter. Public buildings will no longer be lit from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. It will be forbidden to illuminate advertising panels from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., in order to save energy. The total of the measures announced will reduce the volume of gas consumed by 2 to 2.5%, which means that we still have a long way ahead of us..”
We are indeed far from the mark. According to the minister, Germany will have to reduce its gas consumption by 20% if the country wants to escape shortages next winter.
