Tribute to the FFM at the Imperial Cinema

The World Film Festival is not back this year, but Montreal moviegoers will nevertheless have the opportunity to see on the big screen some twenty feature films that have marked the history of this festival, founded by Serge Losique in 1977.

From this Thursday, August 25, and until September 5, on the dates when the FFM has traditionally taken place for just over 40 years, the Imperial cinema will open its doors to the public, with screenings where admission will be free. .

The selection starts with Carmenpresented at the FFM as a North American premiere in 1983. Starring Laura del Sol, Antonio Gadez, Cristina Hoyos and Paco de Lucía, this sublime film by Carlos Saura, a great success at the time, is rarely shown in Quebec.

The tribute ends on September 5 with the presentation of the film The Plouffesby Gilles Carle.

Between these two presentations, 18 other feature films were selected, among which a good dozen winners of the Grand Prix des Amériques, in particular The Kid Brother (Kenny), by Claude Gagnon (1987), Salmonberriesby Percy Adlon (1991), and The color of paradiseby Majid Majidi (1999).

The event was set up by the Global Festival des films du monde, a new organization which defines itself as “the natural successor of the Festival des films du monde”, and whose ambition would be to relaunch the festival. Filmmaker André Forcier and the first director of the Cannes Film Festival Directors’ Fortnight, Pierre-Henri Deleau, are part of the board of directors.
