Canada won the gold medal at the World Junior Hockey Championships on Saturday in a tournament that did not draw crowds. Too bad for the players of Team Canada Junior 2022, but there is nothing to celebrate at Hockey Canada.

Not until allegations of gang rape by junior national team players in 2018 and 2003 are cleared up. Not until the culprits, if any, face punishment from Hockey Canada and the National Hockey League. Not until there is a real culture change. Not until we clean up Hockey Canada. Senior executives, including CEO Scott Smith, and board members must leave. They initially remained silent in public about the gang rape allegations and were content with an incomplete investigation. And now, they would have the credibility to put in place an action plan to fight against sexual violence? No. The Trudeau government, which has cut its funding, must hold the hard line. Hockey Canada officials are trying to buy time, but they don’t deserve it. Notice to sponsors (including the next World Juniors in Halifax), provincial federations and parents: it’s your turn to increase the pressure and demand the departure of the current leaders. So that we can operate this change of culture on solid foundations.
