Nick Kyrgios in Australian court in October

(Canberra) Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios will face assault charges in October in a Canberra court after his appeal was dismissed on Tuesday, court officials said on Tuesday.

Kyrgios, 27, did not show up for the initial hearing on Tuesday and details of the charges were not released. His lawyer had indicated in July that they were linked to an incident which occurred in December 2021.

The player’s lawyer, Michael Kukulies-Smith, said he asked for the case to be heard on November 25, pointing out that Kyrgios spends little time in the Australian capital and that late November was one of his few available windows.

But magistrate Louise Taylor adjourned the case to October 4.

Kyrgios, who reached his first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon in July, is due to compete in the US Open which begins Monday in New York.
