Quebec must act without delay to ensure the survival of the caribou and must review its forest management, concludes the Independent Commission on Forest and Mountain Caribou, in a report published Monday, which skins the Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks.

“There is an urgent need to act,” says the Commission, which notes that the government has been aware “for more than twenty years” of the problems affecting caribou.
“Time has already heavily mortgaged the situation [et] we risk crossing a point of no return,” write the commissioners, who submit 35 recommendations to the Ministry of Forests, Wildlife and Parks (MFFP).
First: “proceed as quickly as possible with the development and implementation of a strategy for the protection and recovery of woodland caribou”, which is long overdue.
In the meantime, the MFFP should immediately implement protective measures such as moratoriums to protect large tracts of mature forest, suggests the Commission.
More details to come.
