She did it ! After qualifying, Caroline Garcia won the WTA 1000 in Cincinnati on Sunday August 21. In the final, she gave the Czech Petra Kvitova no chance (6-2, 6-4) in 1h42. Asphyxiating his opponent from the first minutes (4-0), the Habs only experienced a small alert in the second set, having to save several break points.

At 28, this is his first victory in a WTA 1000 (the highest level apart from the Grand Slam tournaments) for five years. It is also his third success this year, after Bad Homburg and Warsaw, and the tenth overall in his career.

Never has a player out of qualifying won a WTA 1000. “It was a great week. It’s hard to believe I’m here with the trophy, declared the winner at the time of the presentation of the cups. Caroline Garcia has indeed lined up the prestigious victories in Ohio. From the world number 3, Maria Sakkari (in the second round), to the 8th in the WTA, Jessica Pegula (in quarters), passing by the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, 7th in the ranking, in the semi-finals, none could keep pace against the power of the Lyonnaise.

This victory allows the Habs to move up to 17th in the world rankings. She will therefore be seeded at the US Open. The last Grand Slam of the year starts on August 29, with a Frenchwoman who begins to dream of a New York triumph.
